The idea of this is that you rest your fingers on a key each and you press your fingers in combinations. The key press is registered when you release the keys. There are a few designs of chording keyboards which use different combinations to generate different characters, but the Microwriter system was probably the most successful of them. The Microwriter alphabet is supposed to be easy to remember as the buttons you press to get a certain letter are related to the shape of the letter generated. According to the literature, you can learn to type on it proficiently (i.e. as good as handwriting) in a few weeks.

I, personally, haven’t put the time to learn to type Microwriter since there is also an alphabetic keyboard on the AgendA (as opposed to one in a more common QWERTY layout). I spent some time fiddling about, and worked out the following, which I attempted to write in the form of a manual.

During my playing around, I discovered that dates are represented with 2-digit years but even numbers such as 24 (for 2024) seem to work… at least at first. The brochure says it’s good up to 2040. That’s not quite true in my testing. When you set the year between 00 and 39 (inclusive), the speaker doesn’t work and the ‘next alarm’ shows no alarms. Setting the year to 1968 has the same day of week as 2024, so I used that (after I worked it out).

The onboard software is supposed to be expandable with memory cards, but this I can’t confirm.

I have thus far deduced the following:

Concepts

Along with the five key Microwriter chording keyboard, there are a set of digits and alphabetic keys, four arrow keys – all of which behave pretty much as expected. There are also a number of other keys like <DIA, DIA> and <FILE, FILE> and NEW and ACT… some of these are more general purpose than others and some only work in certain situations.

There is a power slider on the right hand side which just turns the device on or off. This is not a simple switch as even when off the alarms still sound.

Any entry, such as a diary or agenda entry, is known as a file.

Files can be allocated a ‘drawer’ which is any one letter. Files in a particular drawer can be searched (by pressing a letter from the START menu).

A file can also be allocated a date and time, and set to alarm at that time. You can add a repeat to a file: daily, work day, weekend or specific day of the week.

You can create a file without a date, but as soon as you add one I have not worked out how to remove it.

General keys/actions

General stuff:

CAPS key – switch from lowercase letters to capitals. Note this is not what shift does. Pressing it then pressing a letter generates a capital of it, so does holding it down and pressing the letter key. Pressing it twice switches on ‘caps lock’ mode. You turn it off again by pressing shift CAPS. Caps lock only works on letters – to get the other symbols (like Greek mentioned below) you still need to press caps in caps lock mode.

SHIFT key – enters the symbol or action in grey above the key. This does not give capital letters. You can also use it by pressing the keys together or press the shift key first.

When shift, caps or caps lock modes are enabled, the cursor will indicate it. Normally it’s a solid square but when one of these modes is active a blank like appears near the bottom (for shift) top (for caps) or two lines near the top (for caps lock).

<DIA and DIA> keys increment and decrement fields (such as day of month and month).

Act – an action list (this the same as drawer ‘a’). Can be used in file editing to add the file to the drawer or from the start menu to find within the drawer.

ACT, when editing a file, puts it on the actions list (changes its drawer to ‘a’).

You can clear out all the files in one go by holding ‘a’ when switching on. If you hold START when you switch on, the display shows tho horizontal black bars. If you hold any other key, you get a copyright notice and the serial number.

Display characters:

CAPS when pressed with (or before) a number generates a Greek letter. So for 0..9 you get α β ε μ π ρ σ Σ θ Ω (I think those are the symbols as some don’t fit well in an 8×5 pixel grid). CAPS SPACE is back tick (`) and CAPS RETURN is the degrees symbol (I assume it’s that).

Some shifted number/letter keys are shown as pairs, e.g. () [] . The two characters are entered when you type this, and the cursor is moved back in between them.

The return key (↲, displayed on screen without the arrowhead) is always shown as the last character on a line (the cursor stays after it until you type something else). It marks the end of a line of data and starts again at the first field.

Shift J (|) always appears as the last character on a line. This doesn’t restart the data field like return does.

Moving around, using the clipboard, etc:

<FILE and FILE> keys skip to the next or previous file. This may be through search results.

The DEL key deletes the character to the left of the cursor.

Shift DEL TO, pressed after a letter key deletes back up to that letter.

Shift UNDEL reverses a single character delete – you can press it multiple times.

In file editing, shift MARK marks the current cursor position, use CUT or COPY to copy a block of text from the current cursor position up to the mark. PASTE pulls back cut or copied text to the current cursor position.

In find, CUT and COPY perform the action on a whole file. PASTE pastes it back.

In file edit mode, shift up/down (SCAN) performs as page up and down.

In file edit mode shift left/right (HUNT) jumps forward or backwards through the text searching for the character just typed before it.

START menu

When switched on you get the START menu. This means any number of characters, which means anything you type will be found after any number of characters into the file text. I.e. your text can appear anywhere in the file text. If you delete this box then you can find text starting at the first character in the file. You can also wildcard any single character using shift Q (⊡ a box containing a vertical line).

A date search will display a date in the usual format (e.g.
Su30Sep24
). The cursor starts on the day-in-month number and pressing the left or right cursors changes the field: day-of-week > day-in-month > month > year. You can use the <DIA and DIA> keys to change the field value up or down by one, or the numeric fields can be altered by typing digits. The day-of-week is a special case – pressing a <DIA, DIA> key when the cursor is on this field (or pretty much any key) searches by repeat (an odd thing to search for but possible).

Starting a find always sets the top line and changes it to match the results as you type. The first three characters on the line show the number of results matching the search criteria (a right aligned 3 digit number). The fourth character is the drawer that the search is performed in – this can be * meaning all drawers. There is then a space and the search terms (date or text) appear after that. The subsequent lines show a file within the result set, which you can step through with <FILE and FILE>. Line 2 of the display usually shows the drawer, date and time and alarm status of the file. If the file, however, has no date assigned then this line if omitted. The last two lines show the file contents. You can skip up and down through the file using the up/down cursors, or by page using shift up/down (SCAN).

On search results, you can CUT a file, COPY or PASTE one file. You can delete (wipe) all search results in one go by using the ‘group of files’ menu described below.

Pressing OMIT in find results removes the current file from the result set.

When you have performed a find, pressing START then 4 will give you the ‘group of files’ menu. From here you can perform actions on the resultant find group. From the displayed menu, you can press ‘p’ to print (I can’t test this), ‘w’ to wipe all the files in the group, ‘r’ to reassign them to a different drawer, or HOLD to perform a sub-find within the result set.

Entering an Diary/Organiser item

To enter a new organiser item: Enter the START menu and press NEW. This functionality is available using _ which displays
chs:=
-number. I also had no way to power it from an external supply since the power jack was slightly smaller than any I had lying around. So I ordered something I thought would fit. There was also no indication as to what voltage and polarity it was. If only I had a manual…

The AgendA is an easy device to open. There are a couple of screws hidden by the rubber feet (a normal tactic) and a few plastic clips. After getting the back off, the only loose parts were a switch piece to extend the power switch to the outside of the case, the cover for the serial/parallel expansion port and a tiny green lens that fits in front of the charge light. The switch and cover weren’t difficult to get back in place but the tiny green lens pinged from my tweezers and I haven’t yet located it.

Inside the AgendA are five NiMH batteries (possibly Nicad – they aren’t marked) [ edit: these are Varta V250H ]. I have been unable to find exact replacements.

I made the assumption that each was 1.2V, so I found some that fit and are 1.2V. Neither was the polarity. To determine the polarity I looked for a connection between either side of the connector to the batteries, and found nothing. Then I tried a few capacitors. At least a couple were connected to the outside of the barrel jack. It was a good the polarity was centre-positive. I determined the voltage as being a bit higher than that of the batteries (in order for charging to work). That was 6V (1.2V * 5 batteries). I made an educated guess at 9V but tried 7.5V first. The charge LED lights up better at 9V [ edit: a former owner indicated that a 12V adapter comes with the AgendA ]. Perhaps 12V would yield better battery life, but I’m reluctant to go that high.

Summary

The AgendA is a slightly chunky and odd PDA which (with the original batteries) has very long battery life.

The software being based on ‘everything is a file’ feels a little bit generic and clunky. This might not be a particularly bad way of working though, because a find operation can search everything.

Any file can have an alarm. The alarms are a bit limited, though. An alarm only happens at the time of the event, there is no warning that an event is coming up. Repeats are a bit limited in that you can’t repeat within a date range or have monthly repeats. The repeats are more like what a modern Android phone would call alarms.

The brochure says it has to-do list functionality. I haven’t seen any such thing so I can only think that each to-do item is a file and you delete them once done. It might, alternatively, be that I missed something. I’m sure I have’t worked everything out.

It is also supposed to have a word processor but I haven’t seen much word processing ability beyond cut/copy and paste – no text formatting.

An address book is a feature you would expect on a PDA. Data entry is possible, you could define data fields for name, address, phone number etc. but, again, it’s clunky.

One flaw that took be some time to figure out was the dreaded Y2K bug. It is supposed to be able to handle dates up to the year 2040. This is only partly true. The alarms break if you set the year to anything between 00 and 39 (you only get 2 digits). I quickly figured out that dates in 1968 have the same week days as 2024 and that particular year is not broken.

I can’t say much about the chording input as I haven’t bothered to learn it, but the chording keys themselves are extremely light touch! The documentation I’ve found says this is to help with speed, but it seems to be far too easy to get an accidental press. I also found that there wasn’t much tactile feel for the keys in order to locate your fingers on them. There is a magazine article which gives the tip of using adhesive velcro pieces. I haven’t tried this either but I can see how it might be quite a useful tip.

A big caveat to these observations is, of course, that I don’t have a manual, and the user interface wasn’t easy to work out. My comments might, therefore, be mitigated by features I’m unaware of.

To-Do

Test the chording input.

Get a manual [ edit: got it now ].

Resources

The Microwriter AgendA was a 1989 electronic organiser that won a British Design Award in 1990.

[55,61,2
["post-1814","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-microwriter","category-pdas","category-vintagetech
["GET
